Brazil's CSD BR Mirrors Fund Ownership on Public XRP Ledger

The depository for roughly $4 trillion in registered assets is copying live fund records held by BTG Pactual onto a public blockchain, while keeping its own database as the legal record.

Why it mattersThe mirroring lets approved banks and companies read a second copy of fund records at any time and compare it directly against the depository's database rather than reconciling after the fact.

CSD BR, a Brazilian operator of regulated registration, depository and settlement systems, has begun mirroring ownership records for selected BTG Pactual investment funds on the public XRP Ledger, according to a release shared with CoinDesk. The company registers more than 22 trillion reais of assets, or roughly $4 trillion.

A depository is the institution that keeps the official list of who owns which securities. When someone buys into a fund, the depository updates its books; the banks acting for investors maintain their own records and periodically check them against the depository's to ensure the two agree. That process, called reconciliation, is slow and costly, and any mismatch can delay a trade.

Under the arrangement, CSD BR's existing database remains the authoritative record for registration, custody and settlement. The assets themselves are not being transferred to XRP Ledger. Instead, fund shares already deposited with CSD BR are represented as tokens on the network, giving approved banks and companies a second copy they can read at any time and compare directly against the depository's database rather than reconciling after the fact.

Because XRP Ledger is public, every token movement is visible, including any reversal CSD BR makes, so a divergence between the two sets of records would be detectable. CSD BR retains control over who is allowed to hold and transfer the tokens.

The tokens use XRP Ledger's Multi-Purpose Token standard, which is built for financial assets whose issuers need powers that ordinary cryptocurrencies such as XRP do not offer. CSD BR can restrict participation and freeze assets or reverse transactions when a regulator or court requires it. Participants still pass standard identity and anti-money-laundering checks.

According to Ripple and CSD BR, the project launches with live fund records rather than test assets. That distinguishes it from the blockchain pilots banks have run for years on closed networks or with dummy holdings. Real ownership data is being duplicated onto a public ledger, even though the existing CSD BR system keeps final legal authority.

CSD BR was founded in 2018 and is authorized by both Brazil's central bank and its securities regulator. Its systems register and maintain positions in instruments including securities, derivatives and other financial assets.

The larger ambition comes later. Assets issued and traded directly on a blockchain can change hands and settle within seconds, compared with the day or more conventional securities trades can take to finalize. Mirroring live records first gives the participants a working foundation to test that model.

Once CSD BR is satisfied with the mirroring setup, the companies intend to trial issuing assets directly on XRP Ledger and letting approved participants trade them there. Candidates for that phase include Brazilian real-estate receivables and agribusiness receivables, both established segments of the country's fixed-income market.

What happens nextOnce satisfied with the mirroring setup, the companies intend to trial issuing assets directly on XRP Ledger and letting approved participants trade them there.
